Men-Ups: Pin-Ups With Guys

Let me start by saying these photographs, by Rion Sabean and published at FullyM.com, are hilarious. The way these guys work their tushes - amazing. On a more serious note, though, this series of photographs demonstrates just how ridiculous the photos we see of women in magazines every day really are.

The men are all staring at the camera, like they're waiting for the approval of the viewer. It's striking, as men in magazine photos are usually seen being active, not looking directly at the viewer. They all have raised eyebrows and widened eyes, as if they're afraid or unsure of themselves. And the positions of their bodies often make them vulnerable - they're on their backs or balancing on tiptoes. This is how women are depicted in magazines (and online and in movies and TV shows!) as a matter of course. Because we're so used to these images of women, we tend to become numb to the underlying messages they're sending - that women lack confidence, are always subject to the male gaze and need the approval of others to be valuable. Sabean's photographs do an excellent job of shaking viewers out of that numbness and critiquing standard portrayals of women in the media.
