Atoms For Peace

The past few years have seemed to be the time for artists from across the board to collaborate and create a new series of super groups. For example look at how many successful bands have been created because of this: Cream, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Blind Faith, Humble Pie, A Perfect Circle, Temple of a Dog, Audioslave, Velvet Revolver and Zwan (well they never got famous). Two new super groups are about to emerge and I can NOT wait!

I had seen so many posters posted up around the city last year that just said “Them Crooked Vultures,” I had no idea what was going on and then I heard it. It was amazing. The band is comprised of Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters and Nirvana, Josh Homme from Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal and the one and only John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin! I couldn’t believe it! The sounds of the three of them playing are incredible. I have always had doubts about super groups but this was one I could totally get into. The beats and sounds are unlike any other musical collaboration I have ever heard. Their first single off of their self titled album “New Fang” has already brought the band lots of recognition. The album debuted at number twelve on Billboard 200 in October of last year. If you want to check them out they are scheduled to play Coachella Music and Arts Festival on Friday April 16th, Hove Festival in Arendal, Norway on June 30th and Peace & Love Festival in Borlange, Sweden on July 1st.

In October of 2009 Thom Yorke and friends debuted in Los Angeles with a new band. Though it wasn’t fully made public, well they didn’t even have a name yet. Today Mr. Yorke announced his new band “Atoms for Peace.” Contained in this group is obviously Thom Yorke from Radiohead, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joey Waronker of R.E.M and Mauro Refosco of Forro in the Dark. Radiohead’s producer, Nigel Godrich, will also be working on Atoms for Peace. Yorke said “It has been decided that we call ourselves Atoms for Peace. Hope you like the name. It seemed bleedin’ obvious.” Atoms for Peace is a track from Yorke’s 2006 solo album, The Eraser. Atoms for Peace just announced U.S Tour dates and is playing Sunday’s lineup of Coachella. Hooray! Wait, does this mean no more Radiohead?!
