Musicians Who Need a Reality Check

I love music with all my heart, I really do. I feel like some bands / musicians / what have you — get either way too much credit like, Kesha (I just don’t get it) or hardly get any credit like, The Walkmen. I know that people work really hard to create what they love and I appreciate that. But the most saddening thing is the attitude build up of some of these “rock stars” — yes you made amazing music, yes you are gorgeous but do you really feel the need to announce to the world that you are Jesus? Ever since I could remember I have loved The Smashing Pumpkins and Oasis. Not only are they unique vocally and visually but they sound terrific live! I finally got to cross off The Smashing Pumpkins a few years ago (well part of them), and Oasis! A completed Oasis show, every time I had seen them, Liam and Noel could never finish a set.

I use to love Billy Corgan, with his giant Nike wearing feet, and his shiny bald head. The chemistry of the Pumpkins was something that the rest of music had lacked for a long time. After hearing about the split; I was really sad. Their music videos were so different and edgy. His whiny voice was almost hypnotic, and his snaggletooth made him human. I soon realized that Billy Corgan wasn’t The Smashing Pumpkins; everyone in the band really contributed something to the sound and feeling.

The disappointing factor is that everyone left the Pumpkins and Corgan decided to carry on the name and make way below par music. Though I can’t criticize people for going to see this new version of the Pumpkins (I did, I admit it, but I was too young to go when I first heard them!), it was depressing. Billy Corgan refuses to play old favorites because the Pumpkins are “moving forward”….whatever that means. In last month’s Rolling Stone Magazine, I was excited to read an article about Corgan and what he was planning, I got half way done and was so disgusted I couldn’t finish it. He says “Do I belong in the conversation about the best artists in the world? My answer is yes, I do… I’ve been too productive for too long, and despite what anybody wants to strip away from me, I am influential. I am. So all the Pitchforks in the world can try to strip me of every ounce of dignity, but I belong.” Sorry Billy you are no Jimmy Page……..

I don’t know why I get so irritated at Liam Gallagher; I mean nothing surprises me anymore about the King of Assholes. Oasis is great, period. I was actually surprised last time I saw them live, I mean Liam was a jerk, when he wasn’t singing, he stood at the edge of the stage with arms folded across his chest and peered into the crowd and acted as though the fans were wasting his time. Liam was handing out signed tambourines and making sure the intended person received his gift. Liam and Noel Gallagher have made it really hard for fans to want to be a part of their shows, or their music. The constant break ups, the brothers not caring if they cancel a show right before they go on, or even in the middle of a set! Oasis has publically announced how much they hate, Blur, President Bush, Tony Blair, Green Day, Pete Doherty, Radiohead, and the list goes on. Noel Gallagher was quoted as saying, “Overrated. He's marginally talented, but not anywhere as good as me. If he wasn't fucking-ing a supermodel, no one outside of NME would give a shit about him” [when asked his opinion on Pete Doherty]. Noel also slags his band mates for ingesting cheap drugs, whatever happened to keeping personal band business within the band?

Then this morning on Mog.com, Liam Gallagher had an “exclusive interview” — before I read what the interview was titled I knew it was going to have to do with how amazing he is, and how original he is….that’s amazes me because “Songbird” totally reminds me of “Blackbird” by The Beatles, and sorry Gallagher your glasses seems to remind me of what his name from the Beatles as well, what was his name? Oh yes, John Lennon.

But Q Magazine had to just boost his ego a tad more and name him the “Greatest Frontman Ever” in which he beat John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and Bono, are you kidding me? Gallagher says “I have been telling them that for the last 10 years, so it’s nothin’ new to me!” My favorite quote of all time by Noel has to be “I'm not like John Lennon, who thought he was the great Almighty. I just think I'm John Lennon.”

I guess my point is, yes the fans already think you are amazing, or they wouldn’t be fans. But as a hardcore music lover, it turns me off; arrogant musicians who really haven’t contributed anything really new and exciting in the music world. Sorry guys. I will always love and appreciate your music but seriously get an attitude adjustment.

What ever happened to being humble?
